Call for Return of Downtown Building Signs

Steve Layman's Anderson Layman Company Facebook Page uniquely mixes old postcard images of commercial and public buildings in Licking County, Ohio's past with the listings of new commercial properties for sale or lease in Licking County.

I've always been drawn by this scene above and, notably, the "Boost Newark" sign on top of the Newark Trust Company Building at the center.

Here's the view today, courtesy of Bing Maps:

The white building at center is the same white building from the postcard but with an addition and a new facade.  As a side note, that's the offices for Anderson Layman Company with the green awning next door.

The Trust Building is gone.  No "Boost Newark" sign anymore either.

It would be a Herculean task to get a "Boost Newark" sign back, but wouldn't that be interesting to do?

Downtown New Philadelphia, Ohio still has this type of sign.  This is at the southeast corner of the Tuscarawas County county seat's courthouse square.  It lights up quite nicely at night too.

I hope the day comes when we can see the return of these noble, downtown building signs to our Ohio cities.

  1. As a dyed-in-the-wool sign guy, I really wish I could make a sign like one of those. Most cities out here in Orange County CA would never allow them. There are just a few surviving examples in old Los Angeles What a loss!

  3. The primary device of significance, at least in Saussure's edition of semiotics, is the Indication. "A sign is anything which can be taken as considerably replacing for something else. This something else does not actually have to are available or to actually be somewhere at this time in which a signal take a position in for it. Thus semiotics is in concept the self-discipline learning everything which can be used to be able to lie. If something cannot be used to tell a lie, on the other hand it cannot be used to tell the truth; it cannot actually be used to tell at all."
