Aerospace Center Industry Day at The Works was a success.
People turned out. I’m told the head count of attendees was more than 500 people—very likely a record crowd for a Sunday event at The Works. Given the higher-than-normal number of events in February at The Works, this is all the more amazing.
Kids were inspired. We all witnessed children exploring STEM skills in a way they never had before. The anecdotal stories are endless.
The Works gained a wider audience. No question. Many of the people in attendance had never been to The Works before and had their eyes opened to possibilities.
A picture speaks a thousand words. A video speaks how many?
Did you see the kid who, literally, had the light come on when he figured out how to get software automation to work with the hardware?
How about the 1943 article about what is now the Kaiser Aluminum plant?
With more than 500 people through The Works on a Sunday afternoon, the ultimate goal of inspiring a young person to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math was clearly accomplished.
Time will tell with how many it was accomplished.

You've Never Seen. . .
. . .a live demonstration of the water flow difference between regular concrete and pervious concrete.
. . .where Kaiser Aluminum's products in Heath end up in a Boeing jet.
. . .how software and robotic controls work in a laboratory.
. . .how 3D virtual reality is used to learn how to manufacture new products before the first one has even been built.
All of these things and more will be happening at Aerospace Center Industry Day at The Works on Sunday, February 21 from Noon to 5 p.m.
STEM education and the learning the local relevance of science, technology, engineering, and math skills is not just kids play. I promise a multi-generational experience.

Licking County Has Technology Future
It's scary.
According to Battelle's Rich Rosen and a national statistic he cited, more than 80% of parents discourage their children from science and technology careers.
That's a scary stat for companies like Boeing, Bayer, and Battelle. Companies like these need a workforce of engineers and technicians with the sort of skills that come from the pursuit of science, technology, engineering, and math. These so-called STEM skills are of vital importance and used every day.
It's everyone's job in this community to make sure this statistic never proves true, or even half true, in Licking County.
The Works and its partners in a STEM education initiative have made it their job to provide a local glimpse for parents and kids into the need for STEM skills and provide our schools and teachers with business-focused STEM resources as well.
There is, indeed, a future for STEM-skilled students to find a career in Central Ohio and stay in Licking County.
We just need to show them the way.

Engineers and technicians from Boeing, Kaiser, Bionetics, and the Port Authority will be on hand to show how they use science, technology, engineering, and math every day in their jobs at the Aerospace & Technology Center in Heath.
The event is free to the workforce at the Aerospace Center and their families as well as to members of The Works. Join us!

No Where Else
The Newark Air Force Base used to do open houses for the community. It was a normal year that saw 5,000 people cycle through the hallways of the massive Building 4 at the base to learn what happened there every day.
The United Way parade was another place where the Newark AFB had a big presence. Among the most elaborate floats every year were always the base's entry.
That was the Air Force's way of reaching out to the community and letting people know they existed as a future place for kids who worked hard and excelled at science, technology, engineering, and math.
Now, it's harder to reach a large community audience, but it is still just as necessary.
That's why I'm encouraging folks to mark their calendar for Sunday, February 21, 2010 from Noon to 5 p.m. for Aerospace Center Industry Day at The Works.
